The rockwork of Daven Gray and the Gingerbread House that started it all

The Rockwork of Daven Gray and the Gingerbread House that started it all spans more than eight decades, beginning with George Kayser and his Castle in 1927. Part Hansel and Gretel, part historical memoir, and part Architectural Digest, this story offers something for everyone. It is a tribute to the artists, designers, and craftsmen who, like Daven, choose to do things differently.

In 2011, Daven and his daughter Mariah began gathering the hundreds of images that would become this book. For Daven, a stonemason and Mt. Baldy historian, it was an opportunity to record the story of the Gingerbread House, the place that changed the course of his life and filled it with adventure. For Mariah, it was a chance to hear stories from the good old days, her favorite pastime, and to document her father’s contribution to an ancient and beautiful craft.
