IKEBANA WORKSHOP with Auralynn Nguyen
WHEN: 7 December (Saturday) from 4 to 6pm
WHERE: Ginger Elliott Center at Garner House | 840 N Indian Hill Blvd. Claremont, CA 91711 (909) 621-0848
Auralynn has created amazing Ikebana flower arrangements for our Home Tour home owners the last couple of years (See Karl Benjamin, Harrison McIntosh and this years fabulous Geller home attached) and many of you have asked how Ikebana is done. Well now you can experience it for yourself with a hands-on workshop with Auralynn Nguyen on Saturday, December 7th from 4 - 6 pm at the Ginger Elliott Center at Garner House.
The workshop is open for anyone, regardless of ikebana or floral arrangement experience. You are invited to bring a vessel of your choice (suggested size: minimum 8” tall and 8” long) or use one on loan from the instructor. There will also be a few select vessels by Claremont artists available for sale.
All tools and plant materials provided. No floral foam, chicken wire or kenzan (metal pin holder/flower frog) are necessary. Everyone will have a chance to learn techniques exclusive to Ikebana.
This workshop will bring more connection between ikebana principles and Claremont’s historic ties to ceramic art.
Ikebana is commonly known as one of the revered arts of Japan, bringing minimalistic sensibilities to flower arrangement for tea ceremonies. The Sogetsu school of Ikebana, established in 1927, sought to bring a modern vision to this traditional art with the philosophy that Ikebana can be “made anywhere, anytime, by anyone”. Over the years, the dialogue between ceramic art and Ikebana has evolved, with the vase and plants both being equally important elements in a composition.
With colder weather approaching, the theme will be using fresh and dried materials. Participants will have a chance to learn about line, colour and mass with seasonal flowers. Since dried materials do not require water, participants will also get to explore spatial aspects of Ikebana creations.
$50/person with 15% going to Claremont Heritage as a donation
