Claremont Heritage Presents: The Places of Worship Tour
In Association with DOCOMOMO
Claremont Heritage invites the public to participate in a rare opportunity to explore some of the most significant architect-designed and artist-endowed places of worship in Claremont. The Places of Worship Tour will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, offering participants a closer look at the city’s rich legacy of modern architecture and design.
The tour highlights four extraordinary sites that reflect the creative spirit of the mid-20th century, when world-renowned architects and artists were commissioned to design sacred spaces that combined innovation, artistry, and spirituality. Each site will feature docent-led tours providing historical background, architectural insight, and artistic interpretation.
The tour includes:
- Claremont United Methodist Church (1959) – Designed by acclaimed modernist architect Richard Neutra, this church is a striking example of his human-centered design philosophy.
- Claremont United Church of Christ (1955) – Created by architect Theodore Criley with art direction by noted artist Millard Sheets, this church embodies the unique integration of art and architecture for which Claremont is known.
- Kresge Chapel (1973) – Designed by celebrated architect Edward Durell Stone, this intimate chapel reflects his signature style, blending elegance with modern form.
- Claremont Presbyterian Church (1965) – Designed by architect Culver Heaton, the church demonstrates mid-century interpretations of sacred space in a community-centered setting.
This is a self-driving/walking tour. Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with a map and instructions. Locations may be visited in any order during the tour window. At each site, guests will check in before beginning the docent-led experience.
Please note this is a ticketless event; participants must bring a printed copy of their confirmation for admission.
Tickets are $50 for General Admission and $40 for Heritage or DOCOMOMO members.
The Places of Worship Tour not only celebrates the architectural achievements of master designers but also underscores the unique role Claremont has played as a center of modern art and architecture. From soaring forms to artist-directed interiors, these sacred spaces remain vital parts of the cultural and spiritual life of the community.
